Rhubarb Loves Sun and Shade

by Joyce
(Ontario)

Rhubarb Needs Sun

Rhubarb Needs Sun

Rhubarb loves sun and shade, but how equally well I'm not sure. Too much of one and not enough of the other and vice-versa can't be good.

I have not always had good luck with growing rhubarb, but found out it needs some sun and some shade during the day.

If it is in the sun most of the day it will wilt, if it has not been getting enough water.

Elizabeth's reply

It's hard I find to strike up the perfect balance between the sun and the shade that the rhubarb patch adapts to perfectly.

I have tried to find the perfect spot for some time and seem to be doing well leaning more towards an extra bit of shade during the day. This seems to be helpful and it almost seems that a whole day of fogginess seems to give it quite a burst of growth overnight. This doesn't work though days on end unfortunately.

At some point, it definately needs a good dose of the sunshine and the heat it provides too.
