Attending Any Rhubarb-Festivals This Year In Your Area?
Are there any rhubarb-festivals going on in your corner
of the world?
Just as there are strawberry, apple, blueberry, and garlic festivals,
there are special times set aside throughout the year to appreciate and
celebrate the Pie Plant.
These festivals promise to provide many fun-filled hours of enjoyment
through rhubarb related events and activities galore. Afterall, it's all
about the rhubarb.
It certainly has to be quite an education for those who have never attended.
So, take a look at the listings and see if there is a rhubarb-fair
near you.

Food Trend: More Than Rhubarb Pie
"Rhubarb is going to start showing up in both sweet and savory dishes this year as chefs adapt this versatile ingredient for a number of dishes. Rhubarb can be used in stir fries, pot pies and other savory dishes to give the recipe a hint of sweetness - and a distinctive flavor."
Quote from Associated Content Lifestyle December 2008 regarding
2009 Food Trends -, and certainly good news for rhubarb-festivals across the country.

Rhubarb Rally

Sherwood Park, Alberta
"Most of us in the Eastside GANG (Grandmothers of Alberta
for a New Generation) feel that the only thing that
separates us from those elderly women in Africa is simply
an accident of birth. If we had been born in Africa
rather than Canada some 65 (plus) years ago, the life
story of the African grandmothers would be our own. We
also believe that once our community knows about the pain
and hardship caused by the AIDS pandemic in Africa, and
how the heroic African grandmothers are the only ones
holding devastated families and communities together,
they will want to help out.
Our Rhubarb Rally in Sherwood Park, Alberta on June 7th
will help to make hundreds of people aware of that situation."
The African grannies are renowned for using whatever
materials are available, and putting them to the best
practical use. We thought that we would like to emulate
their resourcefulness by using what is abundant and
plentiful in our own region in spring: rhubarb. We
ordered two books from Ontario which have literally
hundreds of recipes in them, and because we wanted to
give everyone a novel rhubarb “experience”, we chose a
variety of unusual items which we will serve at a public
gathering in support of the African grandmothers. The
recipes for every item offered at this event will be
available for our guests to take home at the end of
the day.
Go on-line to the Stephen Lewis Foundation to find out more about the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign and how you can help.

Knit-a-square
There are an estimated 1.4 million orphans in South Africa, many of them as a result of losing their parents to HIV AIDS. The number is growing - over 500 children a day become orphans. This is a terrible and mostly unrecognised human tragedy.
Knit-a-square.com has been recently set up to ask the knitters and crocheters of the world to send an 8 x 8" (20 x 20cm) square or more to specified charities in South Africa and Zimbabwe, where they will be made up into blankets for these children.
The orphans live in terrible poverty. They need love, shelter, food, education and warmth. Many charities are working hard to provide the first four. The knitters of the world can provide the last.

Riverside Park, Saranac Lake N.Y.
Various rhubarb baked goods and other treats, packets of rhubarb recipes, T-shirts, rhubarb stalks and root balls will be sold.
Celebrate rhubarb in food, games, contests, music, a raffle and more.
Festival chair Barbara Rexilius, nicknamed "Rhubarbara" because of her enthusiasm for the vegetable, hopes that rhubarb will become a serious cash crop for the North Country.
"Why can't it be a cash crop," she said, "if you can find other uses for it than strawberry-rhubarb pie?"
Contests will include: best rhubarb pie, biggest and most beautiful leaf, longest stem and fattest stem. In addition, artists young and old are urged to create art that best represents the essence of rhubarb in the form of poetry, music, drawings, paintings, sculpture, jewelry, garden ceramics, clothing or any other type of expression, the release said.
The Rhubarb Festival will be celebrated along with the Saranac Lake Village Farmers' Market, which will occur from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the same day in the park.
For further information about the festival, which is sponsored by the Adirondack Unitarian Universalist Community, call Rhubarbara at 891-1941.
